چکیده

[1] A suite of satellite and in-situ observations are used to study ocean-atmospheric conditions over the tropical Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) during 2006–2007 when ElNino and an IndianOcean dipole took place simultaneously. Argo profiles reveal a pronounced up-westward propagation of subsurface warming in the southern tropical Indian Ocean associated with Rossby waves traveling on the sloping thermocline. With the thermocline deepening by 60 m, a thick barrier layer forms and propagates with the Rossby wave, potentially contributing to the mixed layer warming. Citation: Chowdary, J. S., C. Structure and Mechanisms of South Indian Ocean Climate Variability

A unique open-ocean upwelling exists in the tropical South Indian Ocean (SIO), a result of the negative wind curl between the southeasterly trades and equatorial westerlies, raising the thermocline in the west. Analysis of in-situ measurements and a model-assimilated dataset reveals a strong influence of subsurface thermocline variability on sea surface temperature (SST) in this upwelling zone....

A Model for the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation

The tropical intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) exhibits pronounced seasonality. The boreal summer ISO is more complex than its winter counterpart due to the coexistence of equatorial eastward, off-equatorial westward, and northward propagating, low-frequency modes and their interactions. Based on observational evidence and results obtained from numerical experiments, a mechanism is proposed for t...

A Theoretical Model of Long Rossby Waves in the Southern Ocean and Their Interaction with Bottom Topography

An analytical model of long Rossby waves is developed for a continuously-stratified, planetary geostrophic ocean in the presence of arbitrary bottom topography under the assumption that the potential vorticity is a linear function of buoyancy. The remaining dynamics are controlled by equations for material conservation of buoyancy along the sea surface and the sea floor. The mean, steady-state ...

An Analytic Study on the Dispersion of Love Wave Propagation in Double Layers Lying Over Inhomogeneous Half-Space

In this work, attempts are made to study the dispersion of Love waves in dry sandy layer sandwiched between fiber reinforced layer and inhomogeneous half space.Inhomogeneity in half space associated with density and rigidity and considered in exponential form. Displacement components for fiber reinforced layer, dry sandy layer and inhomogeneous half-space have been obtained by using method of s...

Forcing Mechanisms of Sea Level Interannual Variability in the Bay of Bengal

A nonlinear, 41⁄2-layer reduced-gravity ocean model with active thermodynamics and mixed layer physics is used to investigate the causes of sea level interannual variability in the Bay of Bengal, which may contribute to flooding and cholera outbreaks in Bangladesh. Forcing by NCEP–NCAR reanalysis fields from 1958 to 1998 yields realistic solutions in the Indian Ocean basin north of 298S. Contro...
